Kanaful
Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 15, 2026
Overview
Kanaful is a Chrome extension from CLSS Studio that displays hiragana readings above Japanese kanji. This policy explains what information Kanaful handles, why it is needed, where it is stored, and when it may be shared.
Kanaful is designed to perform its reading analysis on your device. It does not operate an account system, advertising service, analytics service, or developer-controlled data server.
Information Kanaful Handles
Website content
When Kanaful is enabled, it reads visible Japanese text on the webpage you are viewing so it can identify kanji and generate hiragana readings. In Highlight mode, and when selection overrides Hover mode, Kanaful also processes the text you select.
Extension settings
Kanaful stores your selected reading mode, furigana color, and furigana size with Chrome Storage Sync. Chrome may synchronize these settings between browsers where you are signed in with the same Chrome profile.
How Information Is Used
- Generate hiragana readings for Japanese kanji.
- Show readings in the mode you choose: Show all, Hover, or Highlight.
- Apply your selected reading color and size.
- Restore your preferences across browser sessions.
Kanaful does not use website content or settings for advertising, profiling, analytics, credit decisions, or any purpose unrelated to its Japanese reading features.
On-Device Processing and Retention
Website text is analyzed locally in Chrome. Kanaful does not send webpage content to CLSS Studio, does not retain it in a developer-controlled database, and does not allow people at CLSS Studio to access it.
Page text is handled only as needed to provide readings on the current page. Your mode, color, and size preferences remain in Chrome Storage Sync until you change or clear them through Chrome.
Jisho Lookups
Reading popovers include an optional Explain on Jisho link. Kanaful does not contact Jisho automatically. If you click that link, the selected word or phrase is included in an HTTPS search URL and sent to jisho.org. Your use of Jisho is subject to Jisho's own practices and policies.
Sharing and Selling
- We do not sell user data.
- We do not share website content with advertisers.
- We do not use personal or sensitive data for lending.
- The only user-initiated third-party transfer is the optional Jisho search described above.
Chrome Permissions
Website access
Kanaful needs access to HTTP and HTTPS webpages to find visible Japanese text and display readings on the pages where you use it.
Storage
Kanaful uses Chrome's storage permission only for reading mode, color, and size preferences. It does not store webpage content or selected text.
Security
Kanaful minimizes data handling by performing Japanese text analysis locally and by storing only extension preferences. The optional Jisho lookup uses an encrypted HTTPS connection.
Your Choices
You can set Kanaful to Off at any time, change your appearance preferences from the popup, avoid the optional Jisho link, or uninstall the extension. Chrome controls the storage and syncing of your extension preferences.
Children's Privacy
Kanaful is not directed to children under 13, and CLSS Studio does not knowingly collect personal information from children through Kanaful.
Limited Use
Kanaful's use and transfer of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy when Kanaful's features or privacy practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will identify the latest version.
